Blockchain News Korea was able to interview Ryan King, Director of Acceleration at Emurgo.

Emurgo is a registered company in Japan. Its core mission is to develop, support, and incubate commercial ventures and help integrate these businesses into Cardano’s (ADA) decentralized blockchain ecosystem.

The following is our Q&A with Ryan King (@RyanKingTM)

▲ Ryan King, Director of Acceleration at Emurgo

(BCNewsKorea): Could you explain a bit about your role at Emurgo and how you came to Emurgo?

(King): I currently work under the title of ‘Director of Acceleration’ at Emurgo. What this means is that in addition to generally pushing people to speed up (that doesn’t make me the most popular guy in the office!), I run Emurgo’s upcoming acceleration program. Our accelerator will help to grow companies who have a great idea and want to build it on the Cardano blockchain protocol. We offer a variety of financial, technical, and legal assistance to help turn world-changing ideas into real-life companies with the potential to impact on a grand scale.

Personally, I’ve been in entrepreneurship for most of my life, having founded several companies in the past – most recently a mobile app for corporate training in large companies. Prior to joining Emurgo, I was on a break from tech and was working as a professor of politics and economics at a university in China (where I lived for the last 10 years). These things seemed to come together well – I love helping entrepreneurs, and so jumped at the chance to run an accelerator. But blockchain is a field with huge questions related to regulation, and so my professorship has well prepared me for those debates. It’s amazing how things work out like that! When Emurgo approached me about this role, it was easy to ‘yes’ immediately.

(BCNewsKorea): Could you explain for our readers about the organizational structure between IOHK, Emurgo, and the Cardano Foundation?

(King): Cardano has always had transparency and efficiency at its core. Just as the protocol itself is divided into settlement and computation layers for that purpose, the early founders of Cardano divided themselves into three entities for the same reasons. The Cardano Foundation maintains community and standards for the protocol, IOHK builds the core protocol itself, and Emurgo invests in and helps to grow teams who want to build on Cardano itself. This structure means that there is complete separation of control between regulation, building, and investing.

(BCNewsKorea): What is the primary focus of Emurgo?

(King): Emurgo connects companies that seek blockchain solutions with teams that are building those solutions on the Cardano blockchain. We support those teams with capital, connections, and resources. In short, we are here to support awesome teams who want to build on Cardano! We are also involved in various education efforts, such as integrating Cardano into blockchain courses in universities worldwide, and building developer academies in order to expand the Cardano development talent pool as fast as possible.

(BCNewsKorea): What are the short-term and long-term future goals of Emurgo?

(King): In the short-term, we would like to encourage as many entrepreneurs and teams as possible to choose to build their applications on the Cardano protocol. We also have to focus a lot of our energy into education people en masse about the special features of the protocol and why they should use it. In the long-term, we’d aim to see Cardano as well-established amongst the major blockchain protocols, and for it to be the first choice for DApp developers who seek to utilize the unique features that we offer. We are big dreamers, and believe that blockchain can change the world. In order to do that, we have to usher into the public space applications that regular folks on the street use, and make blockchain a normal part of people’s everyday lives, instead of something they just read about in the media.

(BCNewsKorea): Is Emurgo involved with any Korean companies?

We have been developing relationships with a number of community builders in Korea, and have been super excited to be able to tap into what is an amazing and vibrant community there! We believe that Korea is one of the markets with the most potential and we are very keen to look for partners and teams there. I actually went to college for a while in Korea, so I’m always looking for an excuse to go back!

(BCNewsKorea): Anything else you’d like to let our local readers know about Emurgo?

We’re always on the lookout for new partners. If you’re an entrepreneur with an idea, a startup looking for funding, and investor looking for leads, or a mentor looking to pass on knowledge, please get in touch! Emurgo is here to help.
